VBG supplies new 50mm coupling for Devon draw bar

vbgOwner-driver Cameron Zab, based in Widecombe-in-the-Moor near Newton Abbot, Devon, has recently invested in a DAF FAR XF 6X2 draw bar chassis fitted with a new VBG 575 Version 2.0 coupling, a 50mm load-bearing type designed primarily for operation with centre-axle trailers.

Up until now, VBG explains, the normal design for this type of coupling required the guide funnel part to swivel from side to side against spring pressure when the trailer eye made contact during angular movements.

The guide funnel under spring force then returns to the central position when the truck and trailer are in line. When coupling to the trailer it is necessary to lock the guide funnel in the straight position. It is the movement of the guide funnel and its central locking method which is the weakness of this design, VBG claims – a problem which can be compounded by driver abuse, damage and lack of regular lubrication of the moving parts.

The new VBG 575 Version 2.0 addresses all of these problem areas, the company says, by having a fixed wide angle guide funnel. A pair of wedge-shaped flexible compression blocks are fitted at each side. Hinged metal plates compress the blocks as the trailer eye comes into contact during angular movements.

The VBG design not only eliminates the number of moving parts but also helps reduce damage from abuse by giving superior alignment of the trailer eye during the coupling procedure.

The DAF chassis was supplied by Wessex DAF of Newton Abbot. The coupling and its installation kit, including the VBG (Type Approved) swing-up rear under run bar, were all supplied and fitted by the local VBG service agent, Turners Commercials of Bruton in Somerset.
