CMS SupaTrak telematics system helps give Palletline member the Edge

edgePalletline network member Edge Transport is working in partnership with telematics specialist CMS SupaTrak, in a bid to reduce fuel costs and improve fleet and driver efficiency.

The firm, which provides pallet distribution, transport and storage services, operates more than 30 vehicles and delivers around 600 pallet and parcel consignments each day.

Managing director Jonathan Edge was looking to invest in a telematics solution that would improve the efficiency of its fleet, save the business money and enhance Edge Transport’s sustainability credentials.

“There’s no getting away from the fact that fuel is the biggest cost to our business,” he said. “Volatile prices in the last few years have had a major impact on our business and our bottom line, which often cannot be passed onto our customers.

“Any measures that can be taken to improve fuel efficiency will therefore be well received.  We decided on using telematics because we knew it could play a critical role in helping us achieve fuel savings of up to 15 per cent, whilst also offering us a host of other business benefits, such as reducing Edge Transport’s carbon footprint and promoting better driving habits with our employees.”

Edge Transport installed CMS SupaTrak’s award-winning EcoTrak fuel-saving technology into its fleet of vehicles. The system – which monitors and records key driver performance indicators such as real time MPG, speed, RPM, engine load, idling time and time spent in cruise control – then produces an overall KPI result for each vehicle based on these outputs.  This allows the firm to benchmark the driving style of each of its drivers so they can then work with them to improve their performance.

Jonathan Edge continued: “We chose CMS SupaTrak and its range of driver behaviour and telematics solutions not only because the company came highly recommended to us, but also because of its partnership approach to working.  Ultimately, we weren’t looking for a telematics product, we needed a solution that could be effectively integrated into our operations to start making an impact from day one.  EcoTrak delivers exactly that.

“To get over any potential scepticism from our drivers, we involved them throughout the process, from the trials right through to implementation.  Getting them to buy-in to this has been essential in making it work so effectively.  All of our drivers understand the impact that fuel prices have on the business and they also understand the commercial implications of inefficient driving.

“One of the key benefits of CMS SupaTrak’s EcoTrak solution is it enables us to benchmark our drivers. We are also looking at linking individual driver KPI scores to personal bonuses, as an added incentive.”

CMS SupaTrak’s telematics solutions can also be integrated with a range of other technologies, such as real-time tyre pressure monitoring, digital tachograph, weighing systems, live CCTV, and route planning and optimisation.
