FTA in prescription drugs warning

lowres_drugsThe Freight Transport Association (FTA) has emphasised the importance of drivers’ awareness of laws regarding prescription drugs that came into force last March.

The association was responding to news that drug-driving prosecutions had reached an all-time high in May, with the number of people charged having increased by 144 per cent in 2015 against the previous year according to a report by comparison website confused.com.

The same report found that one in eight motorists admitted to feeling affected by prescription drugs and over-the-counter products such as hayfever tablets.

“Drink driving limits are well known but many drivers may be unaware of changes to the law in England and Wales on medications, including diazepam and temazepam,” warned FTA.

“Limits were introduced for eight commonly-prescribed drugs and anyone whose driving is impaired through exceeding the limit can face prosecution.

“The penalty for drug driving is the same as for drink driving in England and Wales – an automatic ban of at least a year, a fine and up to six months in prison. Lower alcohol limits were introduced in Scotland in December 2014 so it’s important to be aware of the changes.”

The association’s Shopfta division (www.shop.fta.co.uk) has produced an A2 poster and pocket-sized drivers’ guide outlining the dos and don’ts of drink and drug-driving – including details of relevant laws, and methods and timescales for drug detection.

It also stocks a variety of breathalysers and drug testing equipment.
