furnessagmCumbria-based Furness Cars & Commercials has reported a return on investment three times over from its vehicle tracking system during its three years of operation.

With 22 breakdown and recovery vehicles, backed by fully equipped service vans, the family-run firm changed to AGM RouteMaster after a decade of trying other tracking providers.

“Other systems were always very expensive. They promised the earth but delivered well short of the mark,” said director Gary Grieve. “After we signed up with AGM, the difference was immediately apparent and to coin a phrase, it did exactly what it said on the tin.”

Formed over 30 years ago, Furness provides a 24/7 breakdown and recovery service alongside a major repair and maintenance operation for cars and commercial vehicles, from two sites in Crooklands and Askam-in-Furness.

Using the AGM system, Furness is able to monitor the location of each vehicle and can organise job and workload planning. Furthermore, customers are kept aware of estimated arrival times, while loading times can also be accurately recorded. The system also enables driver identification; and using the PTO (power take off) function, the control office can see when any given winch is in operation.

“It’s about flexibility, really,” said Gary Grieve.

“We have tight fleet control and the ability to closely manage fuel usage, while monitoring vehicle idling and individual driver behaviour. It is certainly a very effective tool which is low on cost and high on return. It has paid for itself probably three times over. Furthermore, the back-up service AGM provides is nothing short of excellent.”
