DVSA to launch remote enforcement pilot

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is launching a pilot this spring to test how its new ‘earned recognition’ concept will work in practice.

Earned recognition is a voluntary scheme which will allow operators to share compliance data – such as tachograph and maintenance records – with DVSA remotely. Once recognised as compliant operators, they would not be targeted in DVSA roadside checks.

“We know that roadside checks cost operators time and money, so that’s why we want to make sure that compliant businesses aren’t targeted unnecessarily,” said DVSA, in its Moving On blog updating operators on the pilot.

“This will make sure that we can focus our resources on the operators who pose the biggest risk to road safety.”

DVSA has working with IT and audit providers over the last year to help prepare for testing of the remote enforcement scheme. The pilot is expected to last for around six months.

“It’ll test how the earned recognition concept works,” said DVSA.

“We’ll look at everything, from how you apply, to how we monitor compliance standards.”

The agency promised more information on how to apply to take part in the pilot scheme in due course, but added: “If you have an electronic compliance monitoring system in place already, speak to your IT supplier to see if they’re interested in taking part.”

Operators who think their IT suppliers would like to take part, or IT suppliers who would like more information, can email: remote.compliance@vosa.gsi.gov.uk
