Fuel card provider WEX Europe Services, the owner of the Esso Card portfolio, has recently celebrated five years of operation with a celebration at its Crewe head office.

Founded in November 2014 as a joint venture between WEX Inc. and Radius Payment Solutions, the company says it has experienced considerable growth since purchasing the Esso Card fuel card portfolio from Esso, expanding to become a Europe-wide provider of integrated fleet management solutions.

Supporting more than 1.6 million fuel card users across Europe (an increase of 14 per cent), WEX Europe Services has extended its capabilities considerably over the past five years. Specifically, that has included launching nine products and with a 1250 per cent increase in net income.

Peter Dore, European commercial and marketing director, said: “As someone who’s been here since the very beginning, it’s been fantastic to witness the evolution of the business, which includes the development of the Esso Card offering. Since acquiring the portfolio, we’ve grown our European network, especially in the UK, where we now offer one of the largest fuel card acceptance networks (by number of sites) and have sold almost 10 billion litres of fuel across the continent.

“We’ve also added new product features in markets across Europe. This has included toll payments, pre-pay card options, telematics and two major product releases, launching pre-pay fuel cards in Italy, Germany and an expansion into Eastern Europe planned for early this year. All of which are aimed at improving our customers’ business efficiency, whether they are office-based or out on the road.”

He continued: “At the same time, the industry continues to evolve which means we have to constantly re-evaluate our products and services to ensure we meet our customers’ ever-changing needs. Sustainability, for instance, has become a key priority for many businesses over recent years. This led to our partnership with WeForest and the introduction of Eco Miles – our carbon footprint reduction service that allows businesses of all sizes to reduce their impact on the environment.”

With employees based in offices across eight countries, WEX Europe Services’ total employee numbers have grown by 557 per cent in total. In March 2019 it appointed Eamonn Tierney as managing director, whose vision is to continue to develop WEX Europe Services as a leading expert in fleet services in Europe.

Over the last three decades, Eamonn Tierney has been central to the implementation of key initiatives aimed at improving customer satisfaction and driving innovation at various companies within the financial services industry. These include Barclays, M&S Bank and Bank of America, where he was head of business development for Europe.

Most recently, Tierney was UK Managing Director at Callcredit – one of the largest credit reference agencies in the UK. Today, he hopes to share his experiences gleaned from his previous roles to implement an even more customer-centric business strategy going forward.

Tierney said: “I am excited to be part of WEX Europe Services, as we celebrate our fifth anniversary  – and there is a lot to celebrate. The company has achieved a great deal in the last five years, and the next five years promise to be just as transformative – not just for us, but for the wider fleet management industry.

“I’m eager to build on the established, strong foundation with my experience in delivering industry-leading customer service and focus on putting the customer first. I’m passionate about working closely with the team here, as we look to achieve further success, while supporting our growing customer base across Europe to achieve maximum fleet efficiency.”
