New Shell sensor ‘improves fuel monitoring precision’

shellsensorShell has announced the launch of a new Ultrasonic Fuel Sensor for its HGV fuel management telematics system Shell FuelSave Partner, which the company says will improve the accuracy of fuel consumption data.

The device precisely detects fuel levels in up to two HGV fuel tanks, enhancing the ability of the Shell FuelSave Partner system to detect fraudulent activity, estimate fuel costs for routes, and identify opportunities to help generate fuel savings by adjusting driver behaviour.

The bespoke, non-intrusive device can capture the full tank capacity of an HGV when in motion, and can be installed on a wide range of vehicles. The sensor has also been designed to minimise the potential for removal or tampering by unauthorised personnel.

Sophie Fenner, Smart Transport project manager at Shell, said: “Shell FuelSave Partner offers road transport fleet customers value through the insights it provides – be they in fuel consumption trends or help in fraud detection.

“The precision of these insights is influenced by the accuracy of the fuel level data the device receives. The design of standard fuel gauges often limits the accuracy of fuel level data in certain operating ranges. The Ultrasonic Fuel Sensor has been specially developed to provide a high degree of accuracy no matter how much fuel is in the tank.”

The sensor system is available to all commercial road transport fleets as of today in the UK for a monthly charge.

Existing Shell FuelSave Partner customers can request the system as an additional option from their account managers, while interested parties who are not currently customers are required to sign up for the standard service with the supplementary Ultrasonic Fuel Sensor option.
