Lightest disc brake expands Jost’s trailer range

Vehicle technology provider Jost has introduced a single cylinder DCA L7 disc brake which it says can reduce weight by 24kg across three axles, making it the lightest disc brake in the 22.5” class.

The L7 joins Jost’s wide range of disc brakes and axle systems which are said to span the full array of requirements.

“The DCA L7 maintains the same braking torque as twin cylinder variants, and robust construction is supported by corrosion protection,” said the company.

“The 24kg weight saving is achieved with the DCA L7’s single cylinder design, which totals just 195kg per tri-axle (32.5kg per axle).

“The lightweight construction enables an increased payload and improved efficiency, which can be further improved with Jost’s compact and lightweight axle systems and additional weight-saving options.  At the same time, the DCA L7 achieves 20 kNm braking torque, matching that of twin cylinder variants.”

An optional, easy to fit Brake Wear Indicator (BWI) ensures continuous monitoring of wear, adds the company.

“Relaying a signal to the cab, the BWI makes preventative maintenance easier and increases safety. No tools are required for brake pad replacement and the lining, secured by snap-on fastener, enables faster maintenance.

“To enhance protection and improve durability, the calliper guides are completely encapsulated and the inverted mechanism bellows protect against ingress of dirt and debris.”

Jost specialises in disc brakes, which it says provide improved braking performance by maintaining force compared to drum brakes which suffer fade through overheating.

Its full capability range of disc brake callipers includes the SN7, with a 22.5” rotor providing a maximum 28 kNm of stopping power. The mid-range SK7 offers a balance of braking power to weight while the SN6 is designed for 19.5” rotors.

As a result of the expansive range, Jost says it is able to provide the ideal brake calliper matched to wheel size, axle configuration, braking power requirement and weight.

Jost’s Durable Compact Axle (DCA) systems include a unique monocoque design which integrates the trailing arm, axle tube, brake flange and axle journal into a single unit.

“This creates a durable, compact and lightweight axle and the modular construction means fewer replacement parts resulting in lower stock costs,” said the company.

“The DCA series includes the Weightmaster, weighing from just 381kg, compatible with both 19.5” and 22.5” wheels and virtually all trailers. The Airmaster is the world’s only axle system which stores compressed air for the breaks and suspension in the axle housing. Dispensing with compressed air tanks, this frees up space and reduces weight by nearly 50kg.

“In addition to the weight-saving axle systems range, the Weight Optimiser 27 forged aluminium air bellows reduces 9kg per axle. Additional options also include stainless steel hanger brackets for improved resistance to corrosion, plus a welded one-piece Z-section, designed to increase flexibility and stability.

“The DCA axle system range is also joined by the DLS conventional leaf spring system, designed for 10.5 t axle loads. Utilising a disc brake as per the DCA system, the DLS is compatible with most 22.5” and 19.5” wheels with 19.5” brake rotors.”
