Haldex TPMS aids accident prevention
Vehicle technology provider Haldex has highlighted the potential of its tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to help fleets avoid accidents and breakdowns as a result of flat tyres, as well as extending tyre life and reducing fuel consumption.
The Haldex TPMS constantly measures the air pressure and temperature in trailer tyres and is fully integrated in the Haldex EBS for semi-trailers.
Haldex TPMS measures not only the pressure but also the temperature of the tyres. An underinflated tyre gets hotter than a properly inflated one, explains the company; and there can also be situations where a tyre is properly inflated but its temperature is too high, for example due to radiation from the brake or a roller bearing in bad condition.
Haldex’s ‘flexible’ attachment system provides a degree of freedom to the sensor if it gets bumped by the tyre bead. The other major advantage of this system its versatility, the firm contends: it can be used on all types of rims and profiles.
The sensor, located in the drop centre of the wheel rim, is only 40 mm wide.
“A tyre air pressure 20 per cent below the recommended level reduces tyre life by 20 per cent,” said Haldex.
“As for tractor vehicle fuel consumption: a 20 per cent drop in air pressure means about two per cent increase in fuel consumption. Fuel represents on average between 15 to 25 per cent of the company expenses; the savings potential is then considerable.”
