Haldex boosts safety with TPMS tech

Trailer technology provider Haldex’s portfolio includes a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which constantly measures the temperature as well as the air pressure of each individual tyre.

The system, which is said to extend tyre life, cut fuel consumption and help avoid accidents and breakdowns as a result of flat tyres, is fully integrated in the Haldex EBS for semi-trailers.

Further highlighted benefits include easy servicing, and reduced CO2 emissions.

The 40mm-wide sensor is located in the drop centre of the wheel rim. A flexible attachment system provides a degree of freedom to the sensor if it is bumped by the tyre bead.

The other advantage of this attachment system is its versatility, Haldex says; it can be used on all types of rims and profiles.

The company highlights the potential for tyres with air pressure 20 per cent below the recommended level to suffer a 20 per cent reduced lifespan.

In terms of tractor vehicle fuel consumption, says Haldex, a 20 per cent air pressure drop will increase fuel usage by about two per cent. With fuel representing between 15 to 25 per cent of company expenses on average, this amounts to a considerable potential saving, the firm adds.

Haldex also emphasises the ability of the product to measure temperature; an underinflated tyre gets hotter than a properly inflated one. There can also be situations where a tyre is properly inflated but the temperature is too high: for example, due to radiation from the brake or a poor-condition roller bearing.
