A European transport company specialising in bulk powder, granular product transport, handling and storage has switched to in-house testing after investing in a DVSA-approved in-ground brake tester from workshop equipment expert Totalkare.

Established in 2000 as an owner driver with a single truck, Simon Gibson Transport has since expanded to a fleet of 95 tractor units and 140 bulk powder tanks, with 24 operating centres throughout the UK.

The European transport company runs trucks and tankers of various sizes and designs, predominantly featuring a mixture of bottom discharge and tipping tankers which deliver more than 4 million tonnes across Europe every year.

Having initially purchased a set of mobile column lifts from Totalkare a decade ago, Simon Gibson Transport has extended the relationship with the workshop specialists with the introduction of in-house brake testing equipment at its Goole workshop near Doncaster.

Totalkare installed an in-ground brake tester that will not only save Simon Gibson Transport the time involved driving to and from the test centre, but also the cost of the test itself. With the reduced mileage, vehicle wear and tear and driver time as well as the cost of test, it adds up to a significant financial saving each year while also serving to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

The brake tester comes supplied with cabinet, computer, printer, monitor and handheld tablet which enables brake tests to be conducted with ease from within the cab of the vehicle in just a few minutes.

“With the number of vehicles in our fleet using our Goole workshop, switching to in-house brake testing made complete sense when we ran the figures, with the added benefit of increasing vehicle availability,” said David Bilton, workshop manager for Simon Gibson Transport.

“We’re seeing the impact of the latter immediately and are very pleased with the quality of advice and support provided by Totalkare throughout the buying process.”

Jack Longstaff, area sales manager at Totalkare, added: “Our in-ground brake tester is a great product which can be installed as a standalone application, across a pit or as part of an ATF lane.  We anticipate Simon Gibson Transport will benefit from substantial cost savings over time and are delighted to extend our relationship with them as they continue to thrive.”
