Among the workshop equipment solutions available from Totalkare is the DS2 XP-0 cable-free smoke meter, which has been designed to meet the latest DVSA requirements for the truck, bus and car markets.

The smoke meter detects and measures the amount of light blocked in a sample of smoke emitted from vehicle diesel engines. Its readout displays the smoke density, providing a measure of the efficiency of combustion.

Accredited to the latest Euro 6 standards, it is said to be ideal for ensuring compliance with low emission zones, and will operate down to –15 degrees centigrade in all weathers.

Cited benefits of the system include money-saving potential due to improved fuel economy, as well as accuracy, reliability and portability. Free training is provided by an engineer.

“Increasingly stringent emission regulations for combustion engines are the main reason for the drive towards high-performance emission measurement tools,” said the company.

“Totalkare’s smoke meter is an excellent diagnostic tool to ensure proper maintenance of diesel engines for improved fuel economy and protection of the environment…

“It is engineered to cater for all types of diesel engine vehicles and designed to cope with the rigours of demanding MOT bays.

“Whilst some workshops may only repair/maintain one type of vehicle, most others will deal with a number of different sized vehicles on a daily basis – this makes the smoke meter a versatile testing tool, perfect for any workshop.”

Included with every Totalkare smoke meter is a tablet display, which is said to make testing and interpretation of results straightforward, thereby enhancing workshop productivity levels.

“Once the smoke meter head is entered into the exhaust and the accelerator has been given a push a few times, the tablet gives out a reading which will tell you whether the emission test has been a pass or fail. These results can be recalled later or printed out instantly.”

The firm emphasises the potential time and cost-saving advantages of bringing emission testing in-house.

“By not having to drive to and from a test centre for an outsourced emission test, you’ll not only save time, but also fuel, which will result in reduced costs,” said Totalkare.

“In-house emission testing also removes the cost of the test itself. The only outlay is the cost of the smoke meter equipment – once you have secured this, you will save time and money on an ongoing basis.”

The company says that many of its customers have seen the value of combining an investment in a smoke meter with the adoption of headlamp and brake testing equipment.

“With headlamp aim being one of the most common reasons for annual vehicle test failure, it makes sense to undertake these tests at the same time as the brakes are being inspected,” said Totalkare.

“The emissions test can then be conducted to complete a full set of testing on a vehicle in minimal time.”
