Components provider Diesel Technic UK has highlighted the role played by the trailer control valve, a crucial component of the braking system for towing vehicles and an essential safety device.
“One of the key components of the trailer brake control system, the trailer control valve’s performance is directly linked to the braking performance of the vehicle,” said Mark Todd, Diesel Technic UK’s general manager.

“When the towing vehicle is in motion, compressed air flows from it to the trailer, supplying the trailer control valve with supply air. At the same time, the parking brake exerts pressure, which releases the trailer brake.
“In the event of an emergency braking situation, the maximum brake pressure enters the trailer brake valve. When the driver releases the foot brake, the brake circuits of the towing vehicle are vented, and subsequently, venting takes place through the trailer control valve of the trailer.
“When the parking brake is applied, the trailer control valve bleeds the parking connection, leading to the creation of pressure in the brake line to the trailer. This causes the trailer to move into the brake position.”
Mark advised: “When replacing the trailer control valve, make sure that the brake system is not under pressure. It is also important that the valve is installed with the vent facing downwards. Once installed, it is advisable to check the system for function and tightness.”
