Drive systems specialist Magtec has secured GB Small Series Approval for its own-brand 7.5 tonne electric truck for daily urban operations, the MEV75.

Magtec is a UK designer, manufacturer and integrator of drive systems for electric and hybrid vehicles, and has more than 1,000 electric commercial vehicles in service across the world.

The approval means the MEV75 will be eligible for a government plug-in grant, offering fleet managers a discounted purchase price and reduced monthly finance option.

The MEV75 is designed for operations including last-mile logistics, waste collection and refrigerated deliveries, and is said to be ideal for operation in low emission zones.

The standard 80kWh version has a range of up to 100km, a charge time of up to four hours and a life cycle of up to 10 years.

The GB Small Series Approval scheme is applicable for manufacturers wishing to place vehicles and components on the market in Great Britain. Manufacturers are required to hold Conformity of Production (CoP) compliance directly with the Vehicle Certification Agency before they can secure type approval.

Magtec achieved CoP in vehicle manufacture in 2022 after completing detailed site audits and document submissions to demonstrate how its business operations support the homologation of vehicles. The company also retained its CoP in battery and motor manufacture, which it has held since 2019.

The type approval process for the MEV75 involved a series of costly testing procedures including braking, steering, electromagnetic compatibility, rechargeable energy storage system and noise controls to ensure compliance.

Louise Atkinson, homologation specialist and vehicle integration engineering manager at Magtec, said: “Securing GB Small Series Approval for our MEV75 is a significant milestone for Magtec. It is evidence of our commitment to UK manufacturing and our support for fleet managers as they move to zero emission vehicles. Watch this space for more Magtec own-brand electric vehicles to follow soon.”

The MEV75 is available for immediate order with chassis gliders from stock.

Magtec says it has created more than 100 highly skilled jobs over the last three years. It now employs nearly 170 people – including a number of apprentices – as it scales up production to meet global demand. Magtec is based at a purpose-built new 65,000 sq ft facility in Rotherham with more than two thirds of its supply chain based within South Yorkshire.
