Among the electric vehicles showcased at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC Birmingham was Nissan’s new electric Townstar compact van.

Employing the same platform as Renault’s Kangoo and Mercedes-Benz’s Citan, it delivers a 183-mile range, says the company, rising to 269 miles on urban work.

Equipped with a 45kWh battery pack, it offers 11kW or 22kW AC charging and 80kW DC rapid charging. The latter enables users to charge the battery from 15 per cent to 80 per cent in a shade under 40 minutes, Nissan contends.

All Nissan light commercials come with a five-year/100,000-mile warranty. The electric Townstar’s battery is further protected by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty which kicks in if its charging capacity falls below 70 per cent.

Further features highlighted include an efficient, aerodynamic design; a powertrain optimised with intelligent energy management and battery thermal cooling; and an on-board connectivity service. Townstar is also available with a 10-inch digital instrument panel.

In addition, and for improved cabin comfort, automatic climate control and a heated steering wheel are available, while a heat pump is said to improve both efficiency and comfort in colder temperatures by distributing heat from the battery into the cabin.

Depending on the specifications, other highlights include a payload of between 600 and 800kg and towing capacity of up to 1,500kg. The Townstar EV offers between 3.3 to 4.3 cubic metres of cargo carrying capacity – enough to carry two Euro pallets starting from the short wheelbase version.

An array of available active and passive safety technologies include Blind Spot Warning, Hands-Free Parking, Active Cruise Control, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Side Wind Assist and Trailer Sway Assist.
