DAF offers large cab option for lightweight 18-tonner
Operators looking to maximise payload on their 18-tonne rigids can save 600 kg by opting for a Cummins-built 6.7-litre engine in the DAF XD 4×2 chassis-cab in place of the 10.8-litre in-house product, while retaining a full-size cab. The PX-7 6.7-litre six-cylinder engine is more usually found under the smaller LF cab.
The smaller engine produces 310 hp, complementing the 10.8-litre MX-11 unit’s 300 to 450 hp output range, and has been drastically revised in its latest iteration. NOx control is now SCR-only, there’s a new design of CGI cylinder block and a cast-iron head, new low-friction pistons, and a new air-compressor and turbocharger.
In addition to the top power 310 hp version, the engine is also available with outputs of 230, 260 and 290 hp in the LF chassis only.
Instead of the automated manual transmission usually found behind the bigger engines, the 6.7-litre in the XD drives through a fully-automatic ZF PowerLine transmission that shifts ratios without any torque interruption and offers better response at very low speeds.
Driver vision from the XD cab is up to five stars on TfL’s Direct Vision Standard, depending on chassis spec.
DAF can supply the truck as a single package with factory-built box or curtainside bodywork if required.
