ISN offers Class 7 testing tips
Testing equipment specialist ISN Garage Assist has provided guidance for businesses looking to invest in a Class 7 MOT test bay.
The company says it can advise those considering entering the world of Class 7 MOT testing for the first time, or those just looking to upgrade their equipment.
ISN reports “an increase in orders for Class 7 test bays which incorporate an inspection pit, in preference to a lift,” adding that one of the key restrictions it comes across when conducting an initial survey is workshop height.
“By the time a Luton van has been raised nearly two metres on a four-post MOT lift, you’re going to need well in excess of five metres floor to ceiling height,” said ISN.
“An inspection pit overcomes the height restriction and, while the fashion is currently for prefabricated steel-lined ‘cassette’ pits, the more traditional (and less expensive) block construction version is completely acceptable to the DVSA.”
The company also highlights the benefits of connected equipment, linked directly to the MOT Testing System (MTS), which it says saves time, input errors and the need to print results.
“Current, mandated, connected equipment includes roller brake testers and decelerometers, diesel smoke meters and exhaust gas analysers. Headlamp aligners will be added soon,” said ISN.

Connected equipment offers many advantages, including reduced MOT fraud, reduced human error, increased garage efficiency [and] reduced costs.”
In addition, remote access to connected equipment allows quick-fix solutions or diagnosis, ISN adds, saving time and money.
“Where mandated, all new or replacement MOT testing equipment must be connected. But it’s also important to note that, in addition to entirely new applications, any MOT centres that have historically tested Class 4, 5 and 7 vehicles, must install connected equipment if they are opening a new MOT centre, reopening a closed MOT centre [or] changing ownership.
“The same is true if you’re replacing existing MOT equipment, where connected alternatives are available and enforced, or you are adding an extra test lane including new MOT equipment. “
For operators looking for an extra level of flexibility from their investment, says ISN, a dual revenue bay might be the answer.
