Dr Air-Brake’s smart reversing system
Doctor Air-Brake’s product portfolio includes the Reverse Smart autonomous braking system, which is suitable for trucks, trailers, road sweepers, refuse vehicles, plant vehicles and more.
“The system will save money on frequent repairs to rear light cluster, bumpers, doors etc as well and going one step further and potentially saving lives,” said the company.
“In layman’s terms, this is an autonomous braking system; when it detects objects within its programmable danger zone, the system will warn the driver and when necessary, stop the vehicle via its service brake without driver interaction.
“The vehicle is brought to a controlled stop successfully and is more reliable than just applying the park brake. Using the park brake for such instances can have detrimental effect on other systems including the gear box.”
The solution is particularly suited to industries where the driver may be concentrating on multiple factors, says the firm, such as crew walking behind the vehicle, as well as pedestrians and other road users.
The system can also be fitted for forward motion applications when the vehicle is travelling below a certain programmable speed – for example in a road sweeper where the driver must watch the kerb line while also being aware of what is in front of him.
Reverse Smart uses a specially designed 77Ghz radar to optimise performance, especially for onsite operations.

“We pulse the auto-brake, so it’s not a sudden jolt and more of a controlled stop,” said Doctor Air-Brake.
“Drivers prefer this and it does not damage the drive train, so no warranty issues.
“Because we write all software, we can tailor every installation to best suit vehicle application and customers’ wishes.
“The product is VCA approved and we as a designer/manufacturer are VCA audited to ensure conformity of production.”
