LCV security equipment provider Van Guard has issued advice for fleet operators to help protect against vehicle intrusion and tool theft.

“Ensuring the security of your van is more important than ever in today’s climate, where tool theft and vehicle break-ins are on the rise,” said the company.

“From installing aftermarket locks to marking your tools and investing in tool insurance, these practical measures will help you deter thieves, protect your equipment, and maintain peace of mind.”

Van Guard advised: “One of the most important ways to protect your van is to install aftermarket van locks. Van locks can be installed on cab doors, rear doors, and sliding doors. There are many different types of locks that Van Guard manufacture, including Hooklocks, Deadlocks and Slamlocks.”

It also recommends the use of shielding.

“Investing in van shielding is crucial as it protects vulnerable areas of your vehicle from attacks, reducing the risk of break-ins. Additionally, it acts as a strong deterrent to potential thieves, making your van a less attractive target and helping to safeguard your valuable tools and equipment.”

The importance of good parking habits is also highlighted.

“Park your van in a well-lit area and in a car park that is secure,” said Van Guard.

“It’s also a good idea to park the rear of your van against a building to prevent anyone from trying to break in through the rear doors.

“Keep expensive tools and out of sight, locked away in one of Van Guard’s Tool Stores. The Tool Store provides another layer of protection making it harder for thieves to spot them and gives extra security if a break-in does happen, as the Tool Store is both lockable, and it can be secured to the floor.

“It’s important to mark your tools so that you can identify them when they’re lost or stolen. There are several ways you can do this, including using a UV pen, paint or marker to write your name on the tools.

“Take note of serial numbers on the tools as some companies offer free registration services that allow users to report their lost items and receive replacement ones if necessary.”

Van alarms are a good deterrent, says Van Guard.

“If people know you have an alarm, they are less likely to break into your van. Alarms can also alert you if someone tries to break in, so you can call the police before they get away with any valuables. Some van alarms have built-in GPS so that if the van is stolen, you can find and track the movement of the van.”

Tool insurance is a good investment, adds the firm, which will protect against theft and damage.

“It ensures that you can quickly replace your tools without bearing the full financial burden, minimising downtime and helping you get back to work quickly.”

Van Guard concluded: “Van security is a serious issue, and it’s important to take proper precautions to ensure your van isn’t damaged and your tools aren’t stolen.

“Van Guard’s high quality, British manufactured van security locks help protect van owners from a growing tool theft epidemic by giving you a vast amount of security solutions to choose from.”
