Tackling the driver shortage with PDT

PDT Fleet Training Solutions, part of Pertemps Network Group, has outlined the role it has been playing in helping to combat driver shortages through HGV skills bootcamps.

“The UK’s logistics sector remains the unsung backbone of the economy – but it’s no secret that it’s been under immense pressure,” said PDT.

“A persistent shortage of HGV drivers, intensified by Brexit, an ageing workforce and waning interest from younger generations, has left supply chains strained and businesses scrambling. Amid these challenges, there’s been growing concern over the fate of government-funded HGV Skills Bootcamps – with some under the impression the scheme has been shelved altogether.

“But here’s the reality: the bootcamps haven’t been axed – they’ve evolved. Responsibility for delivery has shifted from central government to local authorities, and funding decisions are now made regionally.”

For providers that have proven their value like PDT, the firm says, this change brings opportunity, not retreat.

Over the past three years, the company has trained more than 3,000 new drivers through these intensive, government-funded programmes.

“Far from just continuing, they’re improving – targeting inclusivity, speed-to-employment and employer collaboration in ways that deliver lasting value to the logistics sector,” it continued.

“Consider the demographics. Nationally, only two per cent of HGV drivers are women. PDT’s bootcamp? 11 per cent female participation – more than five times the industry average. The average learner age is 36, showing real inroads into a younger workforce the industry desperately needs.

“With the bootcamps now locally led, it’s more important than ever to back high-impact, delivery-focused training partners. PDT’s track record shows how effective the devolved model can be when funding is matched with commitment and expertise.”

The company says its bootcamps are built around employer needs, fast-tracking trainees into jobs and helping logistics firms plug urgent gaps in their fleets.

“This isn’t just a skills initiative – it’s a critical part of the solution to a national workforce crisis. While some may have assumed the end of government support for driver training, the truth is more nuanced – and more optimistic. With local authorities holding the reins and trusted providers like PDT leading the charge, government-funded HGV bootcamps are still very much on the road.”

Jack Hicks, area manager at PDT, added: “Over the past three years, it has been a genuine privilege to collaborate with forward-thinking companies across England that have embraced the potential of newly qualified drivers.

“HGV Skills Bootcamps present a powerful opportunity for individuals to upskill, advance their careers and improve household income – all while helping to address the national driver shortage.

“I look forward to continuing our work with local authorities to expand and build on the success of these vital programmes.”
