OTS adds value with AVI fuel management
OTS Group has explained how its automatic vehicle identification (AVI) technology is driving precision, control and real-time insights to fuel operations, ensuring the right fuel is dispensed into the right vehicle, at the right time.
“Until recently, fuel management was largely reactive: tracking fuel inventories, analysing data after the fact, and making operational adjustments over time,” said OTS Group.
“With AVI technology, that has changed.”
For fleet operators, the company says, the technology can help ensure tighter fuel security, lower operational costs, and improved productivity.
“At the heart of AVI technology is RFID-based communication between each authorised vehicle and the fuel pump,” it explained.
“A vehicle equipped with an AVI tag is automatically recognised at the pump, activating the dispenser only when the correct vehicle is in place.
“Odometer readings, driver details, and fuel usage are captured automatically, removing the need for manual entry.
“Unauthorised vehicles and secondary containers cannot be refuelled, virtually eliminating the risk of theft from the nozzle.
“The result is faster, more secure, and more accurate refuelling—with significantly less administrative effort.”
One cited benefit is reduced operating costs.
“AVI reduces unsanctioned trips, excessive idling, and misuse, while eliminating manual data entry. The time savings at the pump alone can translate into tens of thousands of pounds annually.”
Efficiency improvements are also enabled.
“With real-time insight into fuel usage and vehicle location, fleet managers can make smarter dispatch decisions, optimise routes, and keep assets in use rather than waiting to refuel.”
OTS also highlights the customer service improvements that can result.
“Live tracking and more efficient refuelling mean more accurate ETAs, fewer delays, and better service levels for customers.”
Tesco is among the fleets using the system.
“In April 2022, Tesco recognised the need to modernise its fuel management processes in response to changes in fuel tax rebate legislation. Partnering with OTS Group, Tesco trialled the EasyFuel+ AVI system at one of its distribution centres.”
The trial’s objectives were to enhance fuel security, reduce unauthorised usage, improve refuelling efficiency and capture accurate, real-time fuel data.
Reported results included 84 per cent driver satisfaction with the AVI process, and a noticeable reduction in unauthorised fuel usage – as well as faster transactions and reduced congestion at pumps, and significant operational cost savings.
“Encouraged by the trial, Tesco rolled out EasyFuel+ across 14 distribution centres nationwide.”
OTS says its EasyFuel+ AVI system delivers secure, fast, and accurate fuel control, while EasyFleet adds advanced location tracking, CANbus data, driver communications, and more.
The solutions are said to be scalable (suitable for small fleets through to national networks), and can integrate with existing fuel management systems.
