Shielded and secured with Van Guard

Van Guard Accessories has highlighted some of the key products in its range of locks and shielding components for commercial vehicles.

“In an era plagued by van break-ins and tool thefts, robust vehicle security isn’t just recommended, it’s essential,” said the company.

“Fleet operators are increasingly focused on proactive risk management and van security beyond the standard manufacturer’s provisions to help reduce both immediate losses and long-term disruption.

“Among the UK manufacturers addressing these challenges, Van Guard Accessories has developed a comprehensive approach combining mechanical locking with strategically placed protective shielding that targets known attack methods.”

Hooklocks have been a key part of van security strategies for a number of years now, says the company, offering an effective upgrade over standard deadlocks.

“Unlike the traditional straight-bolt mechanism, a hooklock features a hook-style bolt that locks into a reinforced receiving bracket, making it significantly more resistant to brute force attacks using hand tools or leverage,” said the firm.

“Van Guard’s own hooklock, part of the UltiLock range, was the first of its type to achieve the Sold Secure Gold Standard status and is accredited by the police-preferred Secured by Design initiative. Achieving this level of certification requires a lock to withstand attacks involving snapping, drilling, and picking, as well as brute force entry attempts.”

The UltiLock Hooklock features anti-drill and anti-snap casing, and its cylinder is resistant to pick, bump and drill attacks. It employs a controlled-key system with three keys included per lock – and precise, vehicle-specific fitment is available for major van models.

Van Guard says its Deadlock remains a powerful alternative.

“Featuring a straight bolt, a secure dimple key to guard against lock picking and Silver Standard Sold Secure rating, it offers reliable protection for just about every van in the UK market,” said the company.

“Then there’s Slamlocks, which automatically secure the doors the instant they close, ideal for courier and multi‑drop fleets.”

Nowadays industry analysts recommend a layered approach to van security, says the firm, especially in areas with high tool theft rates.

“This might combine mechanical locks with shielding components such as loom guards, anti-peel brackets, and internal cable shields for a comprehensive security solution.

“Van Guard’s internal and external shielding, fabricated from 304-grade stainless steel has been engineered in response to increasingly sophisticated methods used by thieves – such as drilling through door panels to access internal locking cables.

“Internal shields can be installed behind door skins or near vulnerable lock mechanisms to act as physical barriers and prevent access even if the outer shell is compromised.

“Meanwhile, external shields serve a dual purpose: a visible deterrent to potential thieves and a cost‑effective repair option after an attack. This avoids the expense and downtime of replacing entire panels or doors.”

Van Guard’s range of security components is designed to be modular, allowing operators to customise protection based on vehicle type, operating environment and risk profile.

Fleet managers responsible for multi-drop delivery services might opt for slamlocks for their automatic locking functionality, while service vehicles parked overnight in vulnerable areas may benefit more from reinforced hooklocks and full shielding packages.

“With vans playing a critical role across industries from construction and utilities to delivery and mobile services, securing them against theft is a shared priority,” the company added.

“As attack methods grow more targeted, so too must the defences. By combining certified mechanical locks with tailored shielding solutions, operators can take a proactive stance in safeguarding their fleets and ensure vehicles remain on the road and fit for purpose.”
