Brake testing in the spotlight with Bowmonk

Brake testing equipment provider Bowmonk has highlighted current expectations from DVSA around regular brake testing for HGVs as part of vehicle safety inspections.

“Fortunately, most commercial operators… are having their brakes checked more frequently, as it is a means of monitoring braking efficiency more closely,” said the firm.

The DVSA’s expectation is that every safety inspection will include a brake performance assessment. More frequent brake testing can highlight decreases in performance more quickly, Bowmonk points out, and afford more effective preventative maintenance opportunities.

“Evidently, there are still a great number of commercial workshops who are still of the misconception that all of the aforementioned brake tests have to be performed on a roller brake tester,” said Bowmonk.

This not the case, the company points out, adding that DVSA-approved brake testing equipment such its BrakeCheck can be used for non-MOT brake tests.

“Aside from the mandatory requirements, there is also the upsell opportunity,” said the company.

“Workshops providing a brake overhaul service, where components are in need of replacement, can offer a ‘before and after’ brake test report – an opportunity to show their customers the level of efficiency achieved prior to and following any necessary repair work.

“As optional extras, Bowmonk supply a DVSA-compliant laser temperature gun to detect binding brake assemblies and a BC print function which allows the tester to download the test data to a PC for archival purposes or mailing to another department.”
