Promoting road safety through FORS and Brake partnership
FORS, the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme, has explained how its partnership with the charity Brake is helping to spread awareness of road safety risk.
Founded in 1995 by former transport journalist Mary Williams OBE, Brake supports people affected by road crashes, campaigns for safer streets and ultimately championing a vision of zero road deaths or serious injuries. Brake’s independence gives it a unique authority in raising awareness of road safety risks, says FORS, while influencing policy at the highest level.
From lobbying for stricter speed limits to campaigning for safer streets, the charity plays a vital role in highlighting the conditions where fleet operators and drivers work every day. By working in partnership with FORS, Brake is extending its reach into truck operators, local authorities and professional networks, ensuring that safety messages are shared widely and effectively.
One of Brake’s most recognised initiatives is Road Safety Week, held annually with the participation of schools, businesses and communities. FORS has worked closely with Brake to develop toolkits that help members get involved, enabling operators to share essential road safety messages with local audiences.
FORS also supports Brake through sponsorship of key events. From the Fleet Safety Awards and the Fleet Safety Conference, to more recent sponsorship of the Fleet Safety Innovation Award in 2022, these events provide valuable platforms to showcase best practice, says FORS, and highlight operators who are leading the way in safety standards.
“The partnership between FORS and Brake is built on shared knowledge and expertise,” said FORS concession director Geraint Davies.
“Brake brings specialist understanding of road risk, crash prevention and victim support, while we connect these insights to the day-to-day realities of fleet operation. Together, the collaboration reinforces vital training such as the Safe Urban Driving course, helping to transform new skills into long-term behavioural change for drivers.”
The collaboration between FORS and Brake continues to broaden the reach of the road safety message across schools, communities, operators and the wider public.
Commenting on the importance of the partnership with FORS, Brake CEO, Ross Moorlock, said: “A death or serious injury on our roads should be rare – but five people die on the UK’s roads every day, and over 15 times as many suffer serious, life-changing injuries. For families affected, life changes instantly.
“That’s where Brake’s National Road Victim Service steps in, providing specialist, trauma-informed support to families across the UK. We work to prevent crashes, reduce harm, and ensure every road victim gets the support they need.
“With help from organisations like FORS, Brake will support over 2,000 families in 2025. A huge thank you to FORS for your commitment to road safety. If you’d like to help us support more families or drive change for safer roads in your community, please get in touch. Together, we can make a real difference.”
