VUE: reducing accidents with advanced camera systems

Fleet safety specialist VUE has outlined the potential of advanced camera technology to help drive down collisions.

The rise in the number of HGVs is fuelled by the ongoing growth of e-commerce, the company says, but the darker side to the growth of consumerism is the risk of distributing the goods.

“More vehicles on the road inevitably means greater chances for incidents. While incidents are also inevitable, it’s important to minimise all risks where possible,” said VUE.

“At the heart of improved safety lies clear visibility. Modern telematics and camera systems, such as those provided by VUE, are revolutionising the way fleet operators monitor, manage and protect their drivers and vehicles – improving the behaviour patterns of drivers.

“By fitting HGVs with multiple camera systems along with sensors, blind spots around the vehicle are virtually eliminated, allowing drivers to have a full 360-degree view of their surroundings.

“This enhanced visibility plays a crucial role in preventing collisions, especially in busy areas where vulnerable road users are most at risk.”

The introduction of Transport for London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) has further emphasised the importance of visibility in fleet safety, says VUE, restricting the operations of HGVs in the capital unless they meet the required safety specifications.

“Helping operators comply, VUE provides comprehensive camera and video telematics solutions that not only meet but exceed the industry standard, with its high-quality hardware and reliable software assisting fleet operators with better managing their fleet,” said the company.

It cites the example of a VUE customer, a major UK logistics company, which upgraded its fleet to meet the DVS standard regulations. The project involved both retrofitting existing vehicles and full installations on those without prior systems. The customer praised VUE’s structured approach, highlighting the collaborative support from account management, finance and bookings teams.

“Weekly calls kept everyone updated and ensured momentum,” their fleet operations lead noted.

“Cloe from the bookings team was superb in scheduling evening and weekend fits to avoid disrupting our operations. Certificates of fitment arrived without delay, allowing us to apply for permits smoothly. Overall, the project ran efficiently and successfully.”

VUE concluded: “Integrating advanced camera systems and video telematics, fleets gain not just compliance but actionable insights that improve driver behaviour, reduce the number of accidents and keep operations running smoothly.”
