Driving up performance with Falken

CV tyre manufacturer Falken has explained how it works closely with distributors and workshops to deliver savings that can transform fleet performance.

“In 2025, UK haulage operators faced mounting pressure to reduce operating costs, improve vehicle uptime and meet sustainability targets,” said Falken.

“Tyres, often overlooked, became a key focus area for efficiency gains.”

It cites the example of a major regional haulage fleet in the UK, operating 100 HGVs across mixed routes.

“It had been experiencing increasingly frequent tyre-related downtime due to underinflation and tread damage. This was leading to high replacement costs from the premature wear. It also faced additional pressure to reduce waste and emissions so turned to Falken for a robust solution.”

Working with its distributor Protyre Truck, Falken specialists suggested introducing its BI856 drive axle tyre and RI151 steering axle tyre, supported by a proactive maintenance programme.

“Features such as the 3D Miura-Ori sipes deliver even wear and extended mileage whilst Falken’s 4D Nano Design technology ensured it has an enlarged footprint, delivering excellent traction in any weather,” said the manufacturer.

“Stone ejector technology offered increased protection for mixed-surface operations.

“By partnering with a Falken-approved service agent, the operation received monthly tyre inspections and pressure checks, driver training on avoiding kerb impacts and sharp turns, alongside load management advice based on axle specifications.”

The results were dramatic, says Falken: downtime reduced by 30 per cent through proactive maintenance; tyre lifespan was extended by 20 per cent via regrooving, while CO₂ emissions were cut by 25 per cent thanks to retreading.

According to Malcolm Firkins, head of truck and agri at Protyre Truck, the key to delivering exceptional tyre performance and controlling operating costs is proactive, preventative maintenance.

“Consistent fleet checks allow us to identify issues early, reduce downtime and maintain vehicles in optimal condition.

“Routine pressure checks and adjustments – always aligned with the manufacturer’s specifications – are essential for safety, longevity and fuel efficiency.

“We ensure that every vehicle is fitted with the correct Falken tyre for its specific working environment. Proper application is one of the most important factors in achieving maximum tyre life.

“Our monthly tyre inspection process gives clear visibility of wear patterns, ensuring our technicians can deliver proactive maintenance, not reactive repairs.

“By combining the right product, proper inflation and ongoing inspection, we give every tyre the opportunity to achieve its full lifespan – improving fleet safety and driving down cost-per-kilometre.”

Another customer of Falken and Protyre Truck is Aqua Pura.

“We are proud to announce Aqua Pura as a new customer win for Protyre Truck, secured through the strength of our Falken truck tyre offering and our comprehensive service package,” added Malc Firkins.

“By demonstrating the performance, reliability and value of Falken’s truck tyres, we were able to clearly show Aqua Pura how the brand supports safer operations, tyre longevity and reduced whole life costs. Combined with our full proactive service programme, we presented a solution focused on maximising uptime and minimising avoidable spend.”

Key to the success is proactive maintenance, according to Firkins.

“Our proactive maintenance approach ensures regular fleet inspections, early identification of wear issues and prompt corrective actions. This enables Protyre Truck to help Aqua Pura keep operating costs under control, while maintaining high service standards across their fleet.”

Alongside the cost benefits, the partnership supports the company’s environmental and sustainability commitments.

“By optimising tyre performance, extending casing life and reducing waste, we support Aqua Pura in operating more efficiently and sustainably,” he said.
