Brembo braking expertise from Roadlink

Braking components specialist Roadlink’s commercial vehicle product portfolio includes the Brembo brake disc range, which is said to offer a range of performance and safety benefits.

During CV braking, energy is transferred into heat. According to Roadlink, at the disc/pad interface 80 per cent of the heat is absorbed by the disc, which is why disc quality is so critical for safe commercial vehicle braking.

“The ability and time taken for a disc to cool is vital for safe and continuous braking,” said the company.

“Brembo PVT Plus venting technology is a unique development and is patented by Brembo. With PVT Plus, the shape and position of the venting pillars improves air circulation and cooling and helps create a greater barrier to the formation of thermal cracks.

“Unlike most aftermarket CV brake discs, Brembo discs are produced from High Carbon (HC) cast iron, developed with the same parameters as the original equipment which ensures greater comfort and low noise as the result of their high damping coefficient.”

In addition to safer braking, Brembo PVT Plus venting reduces wear, Roadlink adds, and therefore extends the life of both discs and pads.

“The unique Brembo PVT Plus disc design also offers significant weight reduction of up to 10 per cent which delivers further benefits to the vehicle operator such as lower fuel consumption, fewer CO2 emissions and improved road holding.

“Brembo CV disc quality and cost effectiveness is proven by the fact that they are specified as original equipment by most European truck and trailer axle manufacturers.”

Roadlink continued: “In our experience, many vehicle operators have good knowledge of and sometimes strong brand preference regarding the CV disc pad brands they select for their trucks and trailers.

“However, due to previous lack of choice, availability and possibly product information there has generally been less understanding and appreciation of the importance of CV brake disc brand and quality in relation to safe and cost effective braking.

“Unfortunately, even still today in the independent aftermarket, unlike disc pads, most CV brake discs are not manufactured by the brand name on the box.”

Trucks, often operating at full load and near design limits, generate significantly more heat than passenger cars, the company adds.

“Efficient heat dissipation is essential to maintain braking performance and safety. Vented discs dissipate heat up to 40 per cent faster than solid discs. This translates into fewer thermal cracks (the leading cause of disc replacement), longer lifespan for discs and pads, reduced maintenance costs and downtime, and a significant reduction in brake fade.

“Beyond performance, vented discs are lighter, which helps lower fuel consumption and emissions while extending the life of components such as bearings and tyres…

“For heavy vehicles, where safety and system longevity are paramount, ventilated discs, especially those with high-performance ventilation systems, are the optimal choice. They deliver superior cooling, better performance, longer component life and lower operational costs.”

Manufactured in Brembo’s own European plants, the full brake CV disc range is available from local parts distributors via Roadlink.
