Richford renews fleet with Volvo rigid recovery trucks

Alfreton, Derbyshire-based operator Richford Motor Services has invested in 24 Volvo FL 4×2 recovery trucks as part of a fleet renewal programme.

Founded in 1990, Richford Motor Services operates from nine depots and offers recovery services across the UK.

The 12-tonne rigids, fitted with Boniface VLA bodies and rear air suspension, will carry loads ranging from motorcycles and high-performance cars to light commercial vehicles.

“Our nationwide fleet is now up at around 480 vehicles and growing,” said Phil Richford, owner of Richford Motor Services.

“Over the years, we’ve worked with the majority of truck manufacturers and have opted to go with Volvo for this latest intake.

“The quality of the product is good, with a tough front end and a good reliable engine. Performance and usability of the trucks was another factor in the procurement decision; the Volvos offer a nice, easy drive which has gone down well with our team.”

The trucks were supplied by Jack Castle, regional sales manager at Hartshorne Group, and are powered by Volvo’s D8K engine rated at 250 hp with a peak torque of 950 Nm, driven through an eight-speed ZF PowerLine automated transmission.

Each vehicle is fitted with a four-door, six-seat crew cab and driver-focused comfort features including an air-suspended heated seat with lumbar support, air conditioning, cruise control and a heated windscreen.

Exterior details include Alcoa Dura Bright alloy wheels and a white step light fitted to the lower door to aid entry in low light.

Richford Motor Services said the new trucks will be deployed across its national network, operating as far north as Scotland and into London and the Home Counties, and will run on a 24/7 basis with an expected annual mileage of around 100,000 km per vehicle.

“The new Volvos are a mix of fleet additions and some which replace trucks from another manufacturer,” added Richford.

“The trucks and the level of service have been spot on. We’ve been impressed with the team at Hartshorne Group. They are always available and any problems that may arise are dealt with promptly.”
