MAN unveils 250-tonne tractor
Traton subsidiary MAN has launched a new 250-tonne 8×4 heavy-haulage tractor.
Powered by MAN’s 640 hp/3000 Nm D3876 six-cylinder engine, the powertrain features a WSK torque-converter clutch integrated into the ZF-built MAN TipMatic 12.30 OD automated gearbox. This has special TipMatic shift modes, including one for operating weights up to 250 tonnes and another for fuel economy and weights of ‘only’ 70 tonnes. A Retarder 40 is also fitted to improve braking performance.
After initial assembly at the MAN plant in Munich, the trucks are taken to the company’s modification centre in Wittlich where it is fitted with a hydraulic system capable of generating pressures of up to 300 bar and an uprated air system: these enable it to handle specialist trailers with up to 30 steered axles.
The air and hydraulic tanks are installed in a central tower behind the cab, along with an additional radiator for the engine’s cooling system, and a 960-litre fuel tank.
A Jost JSK 38 C sliding fifth wheel is fitted, along with a three-level front coupling. A Rockinger 56 EA locking hitch can also be fitted to the rear.
The whole vehicle is delivered complete ex-factory and covered by MAN’s normal after-sales and warranty packages. MAN’s Individual Lion S equipment package is an option. This includes exclusive design elements such as carbon applications, black aerodomes, red accents and high-quality interior details such as Alcantara seat covers, decorative stitching and red seat belts. A 24-inch television or an electrically adjustable TV recliner are available as options, as are ambient lighting elements that make everyday driving much more pleasant, especially on long journeys.
Friedrich Baumann, sales and customer solutions director at MAN Truck & Bus, said: “With our new 250-ton tractor unit, we are returning to the supreme discipline of heavy-duty transport. Thanks to MAN Individual’s expertise, we are offering our customers a highly specialized vehicle that combines maximum performance, reliability and economy in one package. In doing so, we are once again sending out a strong signal to simplify our customers’ business.”
