VisionTrack: the role of software-led telematics in next-phase fleet safety
As the government prepares to roll out its new Road Safety Strategy, AI video telematics provider VisionTrack has offered its perspective on what it will mean for HGV and LCV operators.
“Fleets are being asked to show how they’re reducing risk by making evidence‑based decisions to closely manage incidents, and they’re being asked to do it while running tighter operations than ever,” said the company.
“Telematics and connected video already sit at the heart of fleet operations. Meeting the new standard doesn’t require more hardware. Operators need to use the systems they already have in a smarter way. That means adopting software with real-time risk intelligence and validated evidence as part of the daily workflow.”
The problem, says VisionTrack, is that traditional telematics only show you the moment something goes wrong.
“Software‑first systems are changing that dynamic. By using AI to analyse video and categorise events properly, fleets can intervene earlier, coach more effectively and avoid drowning in low‑value alerts.
“One anonymised UK fleet of 500+ vehicles saw a 71 per cent drop in distracted‑driving events after shifting to VisionTrack’s AI‑enabled cameras and software as the new system separated real risk from background noise.”
The improvement came from how the software works, says VisionTrack – namely, event tagging that keeps the noise down; Driver Safety Monitoring that spots fatigue and distraction patterns that wouldn’t be seen otherwise; and coaching workflows that make improvement measurable.
“As the government moves toward behaviour‑based safety expectations, having this level of insight is becoming non‑negotiable,” said the company.
“Ensuring fleets have access to fast, clear and trusted evidence when it comes to a claim is paramount to a swift resolution and this is where software‑based video telematics has become a game‑changer.
“One UK operator with over 4,000 vehicles found they could close claims within 24 hours, saving up to £2,000 per incident, simply because validated footage was available instantly.”
Two big shifts make this possible, says VisionTrack. Footage is automatically encrypted, time‑stamped, categorised and locked, meaning there can be no questions about tampering, gaps or authenticity. Secondly, all the contextual data (speed, location, impact severity) is pulled together automatically, so there is no need to chase files or wait days for clips.
“For fleets to defend themselves against inflated or outright false claims, this speed and certainty is invaluable,” the company added.
