Collett cuts insurance costs with Motia connected platform
Heavy haulage specialist Collett Transport has reportedly achieved a 61 per cent reduction in incidents and a 10 per cent reduction in insurance premiums, since employing connected fleet technology from Motia.
Collett Transport operates a mixed fleet of more than 85 vehicles and 150 trailers, and was looking for a simpler way to manage its growing ecosystem of telematics, cameras, compliance tools and driver performance systems.
Working with Motia and insurer HDI, the fleet operator brought everything together into one connected platform – a move which is said to have provided clearer insight, faster access to data and a more proactive approach to fleet safety and operational performance.
Before partnering with Motia, Collett Transport was using multiple systems to manage fleet data. Telematics, cameras, tachograph analysis and driver behaviour insights all lived on separate platforms, making it harder to access the right information quickly, support claims investigations and link fleet behaviour to insurance performance.
Slow camera downloads and unconnected systems meant the compliance team had to manually cross-check information across five or six different portals. The volume of raw data was high – but useful, actionable insight was limited.
Motia brought together all telematics, camera systems, tachograph data and driver performance tools into one portal, while delivering key driver behaviour metrics including speeding, harsh braking and acceleration, over-revving and idling.
These insights are now benchmarked monthly, with scorecards used to recognise top performers and support drivers who need coaching. Healthy competition has helped elevate overall driving standards.
Cameras now download footage remotely and integrate directly with telematics. This supports FORS and ISO accreditation requirements and gives the team real-time incident reports that help them make quick, informed decisions.
For insurance purposes, Motia mirrored Collett’s existing platform and created a seamless API link with its insurer, HDI. This is said to provide clean, consistent data that directly supports underwriting and risk management. HDI described the setup as “the best they’ve seen”.
Collett Transport says Motia felt like a genuine partner from day one; the team worked consultatively to understand its needs and delivered the complete integration within weeks.
Since adopting Motia’s connected fleet solution, the firm has reported significant improvements across safety, efficiency and cost control: including a 61 per cent reduction in incidents, thanks to better visibility and driver engagement; a 10 per cent reduction in insurance premiums, supported by HDI’s use of Motia data; and a stronger safety culture, with drivers fully on board and using data as part of their ‘armoury and defence’.
Further cited benefits include faster incident response, with real-time reports and immediate access to footage; clearer, simpler operations, with everything now accessible on a single portal; recognition and motivation, with monthly rewards for best and most improved drivers; and better decision making, replacing guesswork with accurate, real-time insight.
Looking ahead, Collett is exploring Motia’s fuel card solution and further app integrations to support continuous improvement.
Dave Collett, managing director at Collett Transport, said: “In order to progress in business, you have to make the right decisions. That’s where Motia comes in for us. It really seems more of a partnership. It was a good decision, and it’s paid for itself, and it’s made a huge impact in our own operations and our efficiencies.”
