PCL aids tyre care for A Davies Transport
Wakefield-based A Davies Transport Ltd has been benefiting from the use of a range of tyre inflation and maintenance tools from air technology specialist PCL.
The operator, whose fleet covers 66,000 miles a week, prioritises daily tyre checks, and its in-house maintenance team ensures tyres are in peak condition at all times.
PCL highlights the direct impact of tyre inflation on load-bearing capacity and running costs when driving, and says using its products for guaranteed inflation accuracy means trucks can be operated safe in the knowledge that fuel consumption will be reduced and tyre life extended.
Owner Andy Davies originally established his business with just one truck in 2007. Today the company runs vehicles ranging from 3.5 tonnes up to 44-tonne artics, and a wide variety of trailers. Clients range from small businesses to multi-national ‘blue-chip’ companies.
“PCL’s products are a huge factor in our ability to be so reliable whilst keeping costs down,” said Andy.
“The drag on a truck is influenced by tyre pressure because if it’s incorrect it can lead to increased rolling resistance, which in turn leads to increased fuel consumption.
“Pre-2024 we inflated tyres by running a closed end connector straight from the compressor until the pressure was in the correct ballpark, checking with a calibrated pressure gauge for accuracy. This was extremely time-consuming.”
A Davies Transport trialled both the Airforce MK4 Truck Handheld Tyre Inflator and the Standard Accura Qube Automatic Tyre Inflator. Both are said to have saved time immediately, removing the need to double-check pressures and giving confidence that every tyre was inflated accurately.
PCL reports that A Davies’ technicians have been impressed with the simplicity of the Accura Qube in particular. The operator sets the required pressure, attaches the connector, and the unit inflates and deflates to achieve the exact level needed.
Andy confirmed: “The compact Accura Qube stood out. Its automatic, plug-and-play operation made it an instant workshop fit, improving labour efficiency, productivity and consistency while ensuring accurate inflation every time.
“For example, new trucks have super sensitive TPMS, and when we were preparing a new Volvo for the fleet the Qube was fantastic. This unit has saved the maintenance team so much time with its accuracy.”
Other PCL products used by the A Davies team include the Quick Change Tyre Valve Core Removal Tool, Hi Vis hose, CH3A02 Connector and APP220S Stubby Impact Wrench.
