Intelligent fuel efficiency from ZF Scalar

ZF has highlighted the features of the fuel and energy management solutions provided by its fleet management platform Scalar, which are designed to reduce operating costs, improve driver performance, and increase operational transparency.

“Built for commercial transport fleets, Scalar combines advanced telematics, real-time analytics, and actionable insights to help businesses optimise the way energy is consumed, monitored, and managed across their vehicles,” said ZF.

“At the heart of Scalar’s fuel optimisation offering is Eco Performance Scoring, a driver-focused analytics capability that measures how driving behaviour impacts fuel consumption and vehicle efficiency.”

The system continuously evaluates individual driver performance using seven key eco-driving indicators: fuel consumption, coasting behaviour, cruise control usage, idling time, overspeed events, panic braking incidents, and high engine RPM operation.

“Based on these measurements, Scalar generates a personalised driver score, that converts these KPIs into an easy-to-understand A-to-F performance score.”

The solution delivers near real-time feedback, enabling drivers to see the effect of their driving style and make immediate adjustments. Through the Scalar Cargo App, drivers can access their individual performance information, review historical trends, and track personal progress over time. This, says ZF, creates a positive and engaging environment where drivers are encouraged to continuously improve their efficiency and contribute to company sustainability objectives.

“For driver coaches and fleet managers, Eco Performance provides comprehensive visibility into driver and fleet performance. Interactive dashboards present key metrics for individual drivers, and overall fleet operations, allowing managers to quickly identify best practices and highlight opportunities for coaching. The straightforward scoring system simplifies performance monitoring and supports data-driven decision-making across the organisation.

“To accommodate different operational requirements, Eco Performance offers configurable KPI targets and performance thresholds. Fleets can tailor measurements based on vehicle type, region, or operational profile, ensuring fair benchmarking and meaningful performance comparisons.”

Beyond reducing consumption, Scalar also helps fleets protect fuel assets through its Energy Management capabilities. The first module being introduced under this pillar is Fuel Drop Detection, a real-time monitoring solution designed to identify sudden and irregular reductions in fuel levels. Such events can result from fuel theft, leakage, unauthorised usage, or operational anomalies.

“The system continuously monitors fuel data across the fleet and automatically flags suspicious fuel drops based on configurable thresholds,” said ZF.

“Each event is enriched with operational context, including vehicle information, driver details, GPS location, timestamps, and route history, enabling rapid investigation and response.

“Fuel Drop Detection includes an interactive dashboard that allows fleet managers to view events by severity, location, vehicle, or time period.”
