Shorten Environmental brings brake testing in-house with Totalkare
Shorten Environmental has taken a significant step to strengthen its in-house vehicle maintenance capabilities, with the installation of an in-ground brake tester from workshop equipment provider Totalkare.
Shorten has been serving the waste and recycling industry as a transport provider for more than 50 years. The company runs a varied fleet to support its services, and safety has always been a priority. Regular maintenance and safety checks are built into how Shorten Environmental operates, and the new brake tester reinforces that commitment.
“The DVSA-approved equipment lets technicians carry out accurate brake performance testing on site, cutting down on trips to external test facilities and making the whole maintenance process more efficient,” said Totalkare.
“The brake tester itself is built for heavy commercial vehicles. It gives precise, repeatable results, so technicians can spot braking problems early and confirm that vehicles meet the safety standards they need to meet. Because it sits in-ground, it fits neatly into the workshop floor. There is no bulky equipment taking up space, and the working environment stays clean and organised, meaning the team can make the most of the space available to them.”
The installation reflects a wider trend across the industry, says the equipment provider, with more transport and haulage operators choosing to bring essential maintenance work in-house.
“Doing so cuts down on downtime, reduces reliance on third-party garages, and gives workshops greater control over how and when their fleet is tested and maintained,” said the firm.
“For Shorten Environmental, the new brake tester is a clear sign of the company’s ongoing focus on safety and efficiency. With more than five decades in the waste and recycling transport sector, the business continues to invest in equipment that keeps its fleet running safely and reliably, supporting the high standards its customers expect.”
Liam Shorten of Shorten Environmental explained why the investment mattered to the business.
“Investing in the Totalkare in-ground brake tester has been a great step forward for our workshop,” he said.
“It allows us to carry out brake testing quickly and accurately on-site, which improves efficiency and helps us keep our fleet safe and compliant at all times.”
Jay Chauhan, UK sales manager at Totalkare, added: “We’re delighted to support Shorten Environmental with this installation. The in-ground brake tester is a reliable and efficient solution for workshops looking to bring brake testing in-house, and it will help the team maintain high safety standards while improving productivity.”
