Volvo success sows further vehicle investment at Mortimers

Family-owned grain and seed merchant Mortimers has acquired a third tractor unit from Volvo Trucks, following the reportedly outstanding performance of its first-ever model from the manufacturer in 2024.

Established in 1869, Mortimers boasts more than 150 years of experience serving farmers and agricultural businesses across Yorkshire and North East England. Alongside its grain trading and agricultural supply operations, the customer operates its own haulage fleet, supporting grain, seed and fertiliser transport throughout the region.

Supplied by Alistair Mann, area sales executive, Crossroads Truck & Bus, the latest arrival to the fleet is a Volvo FH Aero 500 6×2 tractor unit, which will be used to transport grain and seed corn between farms.

Dan Abrahams, transport manager at Mortimers, said: “As our business has grown, we’ve placed an increasing focus on operating equipment that can deliver the levels of reliability and uptime our customers expect. That experience led us to Volvo and the performance of the first FH we acquired two years ago has given us the confidence to continue investing in the brand.

“The FH Aero was brought into the fleet to support our longer distance work, and it’s made a strong impression from day one. Fuel performance has been particularly encouraging, while the comfort, driveability and overall refinement have all been very well received.”

The new FH Aero is powered by a Euro VI-compliant D13TC Step E engine, which produces 500 hp and a peak torque of 2,800 Nm. This is paired with a 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox and I-See predictive cruise control said to yield significant sustainability benefits.

As the new truck is expected to complete much of the company’s longer distance work, the Globetrotter cab features a variety of driver comfort features, including dual armrests, leather upholstery, and full electronic air conditioning with sun, mist and air quality sensors and carbon filter, plus a fridge/freezer and additional cab storage.

On the road five days a week, the truck is expected to clock up to 100,000 km annually. The FH Aero is also backed by a five-year Volvo Gold Contract to maximise uptime.
