Andyfreight installs JOST sensor system as standard
Stourbridge-based haulier Andyfreight Ltd is specifying JOST sensor fifth wheel coupling systems as standard for all of its Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units, in a bid to ensure driver safety.
The firm, which mainly runs Mercedes trucks, is currently operating 25 articulated units, all of which are specified with the JOST fixed fifth wheel.
The JOST sensor fifth wheel system uses three sensors to monitor the connection status of the tractor and trailer whilst coupling and uncoupling. The signals from these sensors are combined and processed by the remote display in the cab. This then provides a clear visual display of the status of the fifth wheel during the coupling process, and will continually monitor its status whilst being used.
The recent delivery of several new Mercedes Actros units will see impressive savings in fuel costs over the year for each new unit, Andyfreight predicts, while the specification for a fixed fifth wheel rather than the sliding version will also help to reduce costs. However, fitting the JOST sensor system was not a financial decision.
Managing director Andy Pountney explained: “We wanted to find a system that would help our drivers maintain their excellent health and safety record and our previous experience with JOST equipment has shown it to be reliable and easy to use.
“We have taken the decision to install this safety system on all of our new trucks as standard to ensure that we maintain the health and safety record of our fleet.
“I am surprised that this type of system is not factory fitted as standard by all manufacturers, giving drivers the reassurance that the trailer is correctly coupled and locked in position… We have looked at other, similar systems, but our drivers and mechanics all stated a preference for the JOST system. It is reliable, simple to use and provides improved safety as well as peace of mind, all of which improves the performance of our drivers.”
