TankSafe puts fuel theft in the spotlight
In today’s challenging operating environment, fuel theft remains a costly risk to truck fleets, says fuel protection specialist TankSafe; some operators feel that no matter what measures they take, determined thieves will always find a way.
“There’s a belief that if thieves want the fuel badly enough, they’ll find a way – such as drilling or spiking the tank,” said Matthew Rose of TankSafe.
“But 99.9 per cent of thieves are looking for speed and simplicity, not confrontation or detection.
“The reality is, tank spiking or drilling is noisy, messy, slow and high-risk. The vast majority of fuel thefts occur through siphoning. If a thief can’t get to the fuel through the filler neck, they move on to an easier target – an unprotected truck.”
Alongside theft, fuel spillage during transit or refuelling also presents operational and environmental problems, says TankSafe – especially as fleet operators face tightening health and safety, and ESG standards.
In response, a growing number of OEMs across the globe are factory-fitting fuel security devices as standard, the firm reports, reflecting increasing demand for effective, built-in protection that gives fleet operators confidence their vehicles are protected from the outset.
Among the range of devices available, TankSafe has been integrated at many OEMs’ factory level – reflecting a broader industry shift toward more proactive protection for customers.
“We speak with operators daily who are doing everything they can to protect their assets,” Ryan Wholey, CEO of TankSafe added.
