Premier Pits helps fleets meet brake testing rules

Premier Pits has explained how it can help operators comply with changes to DVSA guidance that took effect this year, specifically regarding expectations around laden brake testing.

“While the rules improve safety by ensuring brakes are tested under real-world conditions, they also created practical issues for workshops,” said Premier Pits.

“Loading a vehicle with ballast before every test is time-consuming, inefficient, and not always possible.

“That’s why more operators are turning to load simulation brake testers. These systems apply controlled force to the axles, replicating the effect of a fully loaded vehicle without the need to physically ballast it. The result is a safe, repeatable, and DVSA-compliant brake test carried out in-house.”

Brake tester manufacturers use various methods to apply the load simulation force, the firm explains, such as Rising Bed Brake Testers or Pull Down Systems.

“Premier Pits designs and adapts pits to integrate seamlessly with them all.”

Systems include pit-mounted rail systems, where rails are integrated into the pit allow the load simulation equipment to apply force directly where it’s needed; or fixed point anchor plates, which are heavy-duty anchor points built into the pit structure to secure the equipment and transfer load effectively. Meanwhile, floor-mounted rail systems, with rails positioned outside the pit, are said to be ideal for workshops where pit space is limited but external installation is possible.

To support these systems, Premier Pits offers a range of adaptable solutions, including pit adaption or extension, whereby load simulation can be added to any steel pit, either through an extension to create extra space in the bay, or by adapting an existing pit where space is tight.

The company also offers a load simulation mini pit, a compact option for when space is at a premium, or when the brake tester need to operate independently of existing pits.

“By offering these tailored solutions, Premier Pits ensures that no matter the brake tester manufacturer or workshop layout, operators can achieve DVSA-compliant load simulation testing without major disruption,” said the company.

“As regulations tighten, Premier Pits gives HGV operators the confidence that their vehicles are tested properly, their workshops are future-proofed, and their compliance is secure.”
