Talking tyre safety with Tyron Runflat

Tyre safety specialist Tyron Runflat has explained how its solution can help drivers stay in control in the event of a blowout or puncture.

“Working with vehicles across the defence, blue light and commercial vehicle sectors, we see first-hand the life-changing difference between proper and improper tyre maintenance,” said Peter Simson, director at Tyron Runflat.

“We understand the demands across these industries – from long haul journeys to high-speed pursuits, which is why we’ve made it our mission to provide tyre safety systems designed to keep wheels turning and road users safe.

“For HGVs in particular, tyres are a key component to maintaining roadworthiness. From daily checks such as tyre pressure, tread depth and security to regular professional maintenance, checking alignment, rotation and trained pressure checks, plus advanced servicing, tyre maintenance is crucial for keeping these vehicles on the road.

“Unlike other vehicles, the risks for HGVs can be exacerbated due to the weight and size of these vehicles. Requiring longer stopping distances means tyre safety is a crucial element to HGV vehicle servicing.”

Low tyre pressure can be easily avoided, says Peter, but can lead to catastrophic outcomes if not monitored appropriately.

“Under-inflation results in heat building up inside the tyre, which can eventually lead to a drop in pressure. This scenario can result in the driver losing control of the vehicle. Not only does this put the driver at risk, but it also endangers other motorists and can result in additional accidents from debris strewn on motorways.

“Recognising the challenges for commercial vehicle users, our team of specialists created our product, which keeps a vehicle moving to a place of safety after a puncture or blowout. Our Multiband ensures that if a tyre experiences a blowout, the tyre is locked onto the wheel, which helps the driver remain in control.

“It’s important road users do what they can to avoid replacing tyres on a hard shoulder, as this can be incredibly dangerous, so our system allows them to reach a safe location – protecting themselves and other road users. Our bands are also tested to 250km/h, ensuring they provide a reliable and durable solution.

“Fitted into the well of the wheel, the Multiband locks the tyre to the wheel, ensuring it remains between the wheel rim and the road surface.”

Peter cites recent data from the RAC Foundation suggesting that, at the end of June 2025, there were 0.54 million licensed HGVs, which is 1.3 per cent of licensed vehicles. In 2024, 1.59 billion tonnes of goods were carried by GB-registered HGVs in the UK.

“These vehicles are susceptible to greater wear and tear than other road vehicles, due to size, weight and distances travelled, but this makes it even more important that the proper safety precautions are taken,” he said.

“We’re on a mission to share our product with road-reliant industries, such as HGV transport and logistics operators, to ensure goods reach their destination on time and drivers can remain safe.

“However, a key element of this mission relies on road users to keep their tyres in the best working order. Our lightweight solutions can provide a life-saving safety measure in the event of a dangerous situation, but daily maintenance is paramount to motorist safety.”
