Mann-Filter: why air dryer cartridges matter for CV braking

Filtration specialist Mann+Hummel has emphasised the importance of the role that air dryer cartridges play in commercial vehicle braking systems.

“In most heavy-duty commercial vehicles, safe braking depends on a reliable compressed-air system,” said the company, which supplies a range of cartridges via its Mann-Filter brand.

“Braking functions often rely on clean, dry air stored in reservoirs and distributed through valves, lines, and actuators. An air dryer cartridge is a compact component in this system, but it plays a major role in brake performance, system durability, and vehicle safety, especially in demanding, all-weather fleet operation.

“Choosing a high-quality cartridge brand such as a Mann-Filter helps fleets protect braking reliability, supports uptime and cost control.”

Compressed air naturally contains water vapour, the firm explains; when air is compressed, that moisture condenses into liquid water. Additionally, the compressor can introduce oil aerosols, and the intake air can carry dust and fine particles.

“Without effective drying and filtration, contaminants circulate through the pneumatic system and accumulate in reservoirs and components.

“Air dryer cartridges address this by combining desiccant drying with filtration to remove moisture and capture contaminants before air reaches sensitive braking components.”

Moisture and contamination can cause several braking-related issues, adds Mann+Hummel, such as corrosion in valves and reservoirs: water promotes rust, which leads to sticking valves, internal leakage, and inconsistent brake response.

Unreliable control behaviour is another potential issue. ABS and electronically controlled braking depend on precise pneumatic performance; contamination can impair valve function and pressure modulation.

Pressure losses and sluggish actuation can be a further consequence: deposits and corrosion can restrict flow, slowing brake application and release.

“A properly functioning cartridge helps maintain stable pressure control and predictable braking behaviour.

“In winter, moisture can freeze in lines or valves, causing blockages, stuck valves, delayed brake release, or braking malfunctions. Effective drying reduces the water available to freeze, helping fleets avoid cold-weather brake incidents.”

Mann-Filter air dryer cartridges are designed to support commercial vehicle pneumatic systems by focusing on the fundamentals that matter most to braking reliability.

Cited benefits include high moisture removal: effective desiccant performance helps keep system air dry, reducing corrosion risk and improving cold-weather robustness.

Thanks to strong particle and oil aerosol separation, filtration helps limit contamination that can damage valves, governors, and control modules.

“Stable performance supports predictable pressure build-up and brake response, while robust sealing helps prevent bypass that would allow wet air into the system.

“Commercial vehicles often run extended hours and high compressor duty cycles; cartridge robustness helps maintain drying performance between scheduled services.

“Mann-Filter’s portfolio supports common commercial vehicle applications, helping standardise maintenance and reduce complexity across mixed fleets.”

The company concluded: “Replacing an air dryer cartridge on schedule is typically far less costly than repairing downstream pneumatic components. By reducing moisture-related corrosion, freezing events, and contamination-driven wear, Mann-Filter cartridges can help fleets achieve lower total cost of ownership and higher vehicle availability.”
