Filtration specialist Mann+Hummel has emphasised the importance of the role that air dryer cartridges play in commercial vehicle braking systems.

Compressed air naturally contains water vapour, the firm explains; when air is compressed, that moisture condenses into liquid water. Additionally, the compressor can introduce oil aerosols, and the intake air can carry dust and fine particles.

“Air dryer cartridges address this by combining desiccant drying with filtration to remove moisture and capture contaminants before air reaches sensitive braking components.”
Moisture and contamination can cause several braking-related issues, adds Mann+Hummel, such as corrosion in valves and reservoirs: water promotes rust, which leads to sticking valves, internal leakage, and inconsistent brake response.
Unreliable control behaviour is another potential issue. ABS and electronically controlled braking depend on precise pneumatic performance; contamination can impair valve function and pressure modulation.
Pressure losses and sluggish actuation can be a further consequence: deposits and corrosion can restrict flow, slowing brake application and release.
