Novadata: don’t get left behind on remote downloads

Derek Broomfield of Novadata

Tachograph analysis and training provider Novadata has warned fleet operators who may be wavering over the adoption of digital tacho remote download technology not to get left behind.

“While you delay, others are quite literally driving ahead, able to accommodate more business, with their fleet out on the road for longer, collecting or delivering to a fuller schedule,” said Derek Broomfield, chairman of Novadata.

“Remotely downloading driver card data and vehicle unit data without the need to return to depot creates more productivity and faster lead times for your customers. It’s simply the way forward for the industry and no one should get left behind.”

Novadata, which delivers training courses for professional drivers, transport managers, and company directors across the road haulage and passenger transport sectors, began in the field of tachograph analysis.

With significant experience in this area, Derek Broomfield expresses concern that holding off ‘going remote’ will mean some UK fleet operators will get left behind quite unnecessarily.

He is absolutely clear that, with the natural momentum moving from manual tachograph downloads to remote downloading in full swing, proactive fleet operators are already reaping the benefits – including easier compliance, reduced administration, stronger security, better driver oversight and lower costs.

“Fundamentally, it’s all about meeting your customers’ high expectations while ensuring your O-licence is secure,” he continued.

“Your customers expect that you’re running a robust, efficient business that is aligned with DVSA regulations.

“Adopting remote downloading technology, such as Novadata’s Remote Downloading & Tracking solution, provides an invaluable real-time feed. This enables managers/operators to see the current state of play with any or all of their drivers, at any time. And knowledge, as they say, is power.

“As the UK road transport sector increasingly does adopt digital solutions, remote tachograph downloading is well on track to become the industry standard. Your customers are already running digital operations on their sites, and they expect their logistics operators to keep up.”

Implementing this technology now ensures that fleets remain competitive, efficient, and compliant in the long term, says Novadata.

For example, its Online Tachograph Analysis solution allows operators to integrate other aspects of compliance, such as the daily walkaround checks, fleet maintenance management, driver licence checks and driver management.

This centralises and secures a significant amount of data needed for compliance, says the firm, and helps operators to demonstrate more clearly that they are fulfilling their O-licence undertakings.

“Think of the reduction in office time spent chasing up vehicles and people if their data hasn’t been downloaded within their time limits,” Derek added.

“The remote downloading technology eliminates that last minute stress ensuring everything has been done in time. Instead, the driver can download everything daily if they so wish, but certainly comfortably within the legal deadlines, and without all the extra liaison and chasing up that goes on otherwise.”

Novadata highlights tachograph regulations that require driver card data to be downloaded within 28 days, while vehicle unit data must be downloaded within 90 days. In addition, membership of the DVSA’s Earned Recognition scheme requires driver cards to be downloaded within 14 days, and vehicle units to be downloaded at least within 42 days.

The company contends that more secure, time-sensitive record-keeping means operators can identify and address any problems promptly, making infringements – and encounters with the traffic commissioner – far less likely.

As the financial year is drawing to a close for many, Derek is encouraging fleet operators to ensure their 2026/27 budgets include remote downloading as a priority.

He concluded: “With enforcement agencies, particularly the DVSA, demanding accurate, up-to-date records, investing in remote tachograph downloading now is not just about convenience – it’s about safeguarding your business.”
