Dr Air Brake Trailer Check aids maintenance for TIP Group
Transport solutions provider TIP Group has streamlined its maintenance operations by implementing Doctor Air Brake’s Trailer Check systems throughout its extensive fleet operations.
With 150 mobile maintenance vans operating daily across customer sites, TIP faced significant challenges in efficiently servicing trailers while minimising downtime.
Roy Thomas, engineering leader for TIP’s UK Customer Services Centre, explained how the Trailer Check technology has transformed its daily operations.
“Our mobile technicians are constantly on customer sites performing critical maintenance that requires thorough checking of air systems and lighting,” he said.
“The Trailer Check system has been revolutionary because it allows us to conduct these essential tests directly from our mobile vans in the customer’s VOR (vehicle off road) area.”
Before implementing the Trailer Check system, TIP faced a costly and time-consuming process. Each site required a road-going unit – essentially a truck tractor – simply to check trailer air systems and lighting. This not only tied up valuable assets but also created logistical complications and increased labour costs.
“The financial impact has been substantial,” Thomas noted.
“By eliminating the need for road-going units at each service location, we’ve significantly reduced our operational costs while improving our response times to customers.”
The system’s versatility is cited as a key advantage. Technicians can now perform individual light checks as well as comprehensive full-system evaluations – all manageable by a single technician. This capability has dramatically improved workforce efficiency, allowing TIP to provide faster service with fewer personnel.
Beyond basic testing, Doctor Air Brake highlights the Trailer Check’s utility as a sophisticated diagnostic tool for evaluating electronic braking systems (EBS).
“The diagnostic capabilities have enhanced our troubleshooting precision,” Roy Thomas explained. “We can quickly identify and address EBS issues that previously might have required specialised equipment or more time-consuming processes.”
Meanwhile, the system’s remote-control functionality has reportedly transformed how technicians perform brake inspections.
“The handheld remote allows our technicians to operate the brakes while positioned underneath the trailer,” he added. “This capability is invaluable for conducting thorough brake function checks and identifying air leaks throughout the system. It’s not just about efficiency – it’s a significant safety enhancement for our team.”
Thomas continued: “If we didn’t have the trailer check, each site would require the use of a road unit so the air and lights can be checked. This has become an essential item that is used every day by the technician.”
