Biffa keeps fleet clean with Stertil-Koni Skylift
Biffa Waste Services has replaced an old, condemned washbay lift with a brand-new Stertil-Koni Washbay Skylift at its Anglesey depot in North Wales.
The investment is said to have transformed the depot’s vehicle cleaning operations, giving technicians safe and unrestricted access beneath Biffa’s refuse collection vehicles. With full underbody access, vehicles can be cleaned more thoroughly and efficiently, helping to improve washbay productivity while supporting high standards of vehicle cleanliness and maintenance across the fleet.
The Stertil-Koni Skylift features a fully hydraulic, clear-floor design that lifts vehicles vertically without any horizontal movement. By eliminating the need for conventional base frames, it maximises usable floor space, says Stertil-Koni, while creating a safer, less cluttered working environment and improving overall workflow.
“Biffa selected the Sky350 model, offering a lifting capacity of 35 tonnes, specified with 9-metre-long platforms to accommodate its heavy refuse collection vehicles,” explained the lifting equipment specialist.
“Purpose-built for demanding washbay applications, the Skylift incorporates fully hot-dip galvanised platforms, marine-grade coated lifting legs and a stainless steel control box, providing outstanding protection against corrosion in wet and harsh operating environments.
“Raising vehicles to a height of 1.75 metres in around 90 seconds, the lift’s open, base-frame-free design provides unrestricted access beneath the vehicle. This makes it particularly well suited to chassis washing and steam-cleaning operations, where technicians require clear access to every area of the underbody.
“Safety and lifting precision are enhanced by an independent mechanical locking system that engages from just 90mm above floor level. A microprocessor-controlled synchronisation system continuously monitors the lifting process, ensuring the platforms remain level.
“For day-to-day operation, the Skylift is equipped with Stertil-Koni’s patented eBright Smart Control System. Featuring an intuitive full-colour touchscreen, the system provides straightforward operation and clear visual feedback, helping operators work safely and efficiently.
