Improved direct vision with Truck Door Windows
Kerb view window installer Truck Door Windows has outlined the safety and compliance benefits of its technology in increasing visibility of vulnerable road users (VRUs) from the truck cab.
The company points out that providing drivers with a larger field of view has the potential to cut the number of incidents, and says it may be the case that direct vision through the side door has the most benefit at slow driving speeds when there is a VRU moving alongside in a fixed position relative to the HGV.
Installation of kerb view windows on HGVs began in Japan during the 1970s, says the firm, as accidents involving VRUs had become a major social issue.
Truck Door Windows’ product features a single glaze, OEM quality, type approved glass bonded for security and strength, says the company, which prevents condensation and eliminates dirt ingress. There is no window mechanism obstructing the view, or requirement to remove the door panel for cleaning, the firm adds – while a two-year warranty covers installation and product defects.
The company offers a 24-hour turnaround, or four to five weeks for reactive designs, and can operate a like-for-like door exchange programme by arrangement. A courtesy vehicle is available for collection and delivery of back-to-back conversions. Solutions are available for both left and right-hand models.
Keith Banks, business development manager for Truck Door Windows, said: “We are seeing a steady stream of business from companies who are or will be operating within the DVS defined area which is very similar to the current Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
“When you consider that non-compliance will cost £550 a day when charging begins in March 2021, many operators will see the benefits by upgrading their star rating and achieving the 10-year permit by purchasing our OEM standard solution. Our product in most cases enables full operation of the window, too.”
Keith added: “Presently windows fitted to Mercedes-Benz trucks have the ability to retro-enhance star rating. It is hoped that in time all manufacturers will fall into line and award our product with the same level of OEM accessory type approval that Mercedes-Benz awarded Truck Door Windows in August 2019.”
Solutions are already available for various makes and models, including Volvo FH4, FM, FL and FE; DAF CF, XF and LF; MAN TGS, TGM and TGX; Mercedes-Benz Arocs, Actros and Antos; Renault Midlum, Premium, C, K and T; Scania P, G, R and XT series and New Scania; and Iveco, on application.
