Haldex extends horizons with EB+ CAN Hub

Among the commercial vehicle technologies developed by braking systems specialist Haldex is the EB+ CAN Hub – a compact, standalone ECU used on long trailers and road trains, in order to facilitate communication between the braking systems of towing and towed vehicles.

The unit can be used to extend the CAN bus on long trailers, between 45ft-65ft where the 18m cable length limit of the towed vehicle according to ISO 11992 would be breached (‘Repeater’ mode), or on road trains in order to route ISO 11992 messages to two other ECUs (‘Router’ mode).

The benefits of the extended CAN bus technology are said to include easy, logical vehicle installation and automatic configuration.

The system has three EB+ Power A (ISO 7638) connectors, sharing power and lamp connections with a separate ISO 11992 node for each. There is also one input to connect an external pressure sensor for a commercial vehicle not equipped with ISO 11992 (i.e. a truck with ABS system only).

“It is connected to the ISO 7638 connector from the headboard, including the ISO 11992 data communication,” said Haldex.

“It acts as an intermediate CAN node, and then connects to the main EB+ via a 7-core cable of up to 40m length.

“A control line pressure sensor can optionally be connected to the port marked “AUX” on the EB+ CAN Hub, instead of connecting to AUX 4 or 5 of the EB+. This limits the number of long cable runs.

“When equipped, EB+ CAN Hub uses the intermediate ISO 11992 CAN bus to send information from the pressure sensor when there is no electric control line available on the towing vehicle.

“The third 7-pin connection is intended to be used for a following trailer/EBS.”

The system requires Haldex EBS, EB+ Gen3 with software E741 or later on the same trailer, in order that configuration and diagnostics are performed correctly.

In road trains, EB+ CAN Hub works with any EBS meeting the requirements of ISO 11992, which includes all trailers with UN R13 approval. The EB+ CAN hub in router mode controls the transmission of the signals between the EB+ EBS of the preceding and succeeding vehicles within the road train.

The system is configured using Diag+ software 6.20, which can be downloaded from the Trailer Application Guide section of the Haldex website.
