Telematics package is the right MiX for G4S

Security specialist G4S Cash Solutions has reported improved driver performance and significant reductions in collisions and idling following the implementation of a range of software from MiX Telematics.

The company’s UK cash fleet totals 1,485 vehicles, including both light and heavy commercials. G4S wanted to reduce its environmental impact by lowering CO2 emissions, while also improving driver safety by minimising road collisions, and optimising fuel spend.

To help G4S achieve its objectives, MiX Telematics installed MiX 4000, an on-board computer that measures vehicle/engine diagnostics, as well as MiX DriveMate, an in-vehicle display that provides live feedback to drivers.

In addition MyMiX, a driver engagement app, and MiX Insight Agility, a dashboard-based reporting suite, were deployed.

The onboard computer allowed driving behaviours such as idling and speeding to be assessed, and unsafe behaviours that could lead to accidents were noted. These behaviours were then linked to specific drivers using an identification card, and those drivers given relevant training and guidance on how to improve on any poor habits.

The in-vehicle display, MiX DriveMate, has seven LED lights that illuminate while a driver is driving to represent different types of behaviour. According to the data from this display, each driver is assigned a RAG (red, amber, green) score. This system makes drivers continuously aware of their behaviour, allowing them to self-correct as they go, while providing G4S’ team with an idea of which drivers need training.

The MyMiX app allows drivers to see exactly when and where driving events have been triggered and what type of events they were. Drivers can also see how their score compares to that of their colleagues.

All data that is captured is combined and placed into dynamic, customised reports using MiX Insight Agility. This tool allows G4S to analyse the fleet’s efficiency and safety, says MiX, and then put activities into action to improve in the necessary areas.

G4S was also assigned a MiX Telematics customer success team, which continuously analyses data and then supplies guidance as to where improvements can be made and how successful behaviours can be supported.

The partnership between G4S and MiX Telematics reportedly yielded results within just a few months, despite the difficulties posed by Covid-19.

Drivers’ RAG improved by 66 per cent within six months, with 39 per cent of drivers now classified as ‘green’ or safe drivers. This improvement reportedly led to an 80 per cent reduction in collisions.

In addition, within four months, the fleet reduced its idling hours by 43 per cent, equating to a reduction of two tons of CO2 emissions.

“Continuous improvement is key for us,” said David Armitage, head of fleet services at G4S Cash Solutions.

“The implementation of the innovative and impactful MiX Telematics solutions across the G4S fleet has allowed operations to focus on other areas of innovation and improvement – a win on every front.”
