Webasto keeps key workers cool in the cab

An order for eight new DAF Trucks for the NHS Blood & Transplant Service (NHSBT) has been fulfilled by Motus Commercials, with support from climate control specialist Webasto.

The DAF LF 180 rigid trucks have been completed in just two weeks to support the movement of essential products needed for critical Covid-19 plasma trials.

Webasto’s Parking Coolers were specified to be fitted into the DAF cabs in order to support drivers’ comfort levels, adhere to vehicle idling regulations, and encourage best practice in health and safety.

The Webasto Parking Coolers are designed to provide greater control over the climate in which drivers operate, whether driving, resting or sleeping. In this particular instance, the DAF LF 180 rigid trucks are in daily use ensuring essential blood and transplant products are delivered where needed up and down the UK.

“It is hugely important that all drivers, including those key workers who are currently working hard to help protect us against this pandemic, are kept safe and comfortable when carrying out essential and, in some cases, life-saving journeys,” said David Stafford, commercial manager at Webasto.

“Our parking coolers are necessary components to help control in cab climates when the engine is not running, which means that drivers can safely adhere to vehicle idling regulations without compromising their comfort or fear of using more fuel and, releasing more emissions.”

The Webasto system is said to negate the need for engines to be kept running during a rest break or whilst awaiting access to depots, for example.

In warm conditions, says the company, it can be difficult for drivers to keep cool when the engine is not running and with legislation preventing idling, their welfare and comfort is then put into question.  Using the Parking Cooler from Webasto, drivers are able to rest or park in comfort whilst the engine is switched off.

The Parking Coolers from Webasto are designed to be fitted to the roof of the cab, (measuring 14cm in height) and deliver cool, controlled air into the cab. The lightweight system is connected to the 24V vehicle battery and runs on either 1kw or 1.6 kw rated output, which is said to provide the optimum levels of air distribution and quiet operation.

The system features a remote control so the driver can set the temperature to their individual comfort levels and also has a low-voltage cut off ensuring engine start.

Stuart Cornish, regional truck sales manager for Motus, said: “Despite the issues we are all facing in the current climate, Webasto UK Ltd responded very efficiently to complete the installations in a safe and timely manner.”

David Stafforrd added: “It was a remarkable achievement by all those involved to deliver these trucks to the standards required within the given timeframe. I am delighted that we have been able to adopt safe working practices to ensure that our customers are able to get the products or have them installed by our team within their specific timeframes.”
