HGV levy to resume from August
Trade bodies are reminding operators that the HGV levy is to make its return from 1 August, following its suspension during difficult trading times for hauliers amidst the Covid crisis, and subsequent extension of the policy.
HGVs over 12,000kg fall within the scope of the levy, and for vehicles registered in the UK, it must be paid alongside vehicle excise duty (VED) in the same transaction, with rates calculated automatically by DVLA.
Differing from the previous formula, the calculations take into account a vehicle’s weight as a means of broadly approximating its CO2 emissions, as well as its Euro emissions class – with Euro VI vehicles paying significantly less than Euro V trucks or older.
The Road Haulage Association said last month that it remained concerned about the impact that the reintroduction of the levy would have on small-to-medium-sized operators during a tight economic climate.
Levy fees for non-UK HGVs must be paid in advance of driving on UK roads, using either a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly rate. This can be done online, at: www.hgvlevy.service.gov.uk
