Fleet management solutions provider Webfleet has explained how technology can play a vital role in elevating safety protocols, supporting compliance and optimising operational workflows in the realms of tachograph management and trailer brake performance monitoring.

“Tachograph management tools are leading the charge in compliance systems for transport fleets,” said Beverley Wise, Webfleet regional director for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions.

“By automating the process of downloading, analysing and archiving tachograph data, they can enable operators to maintain focus on their core operations, while seamlessly adhering to safety and regulatory requirements.

“The integration of solutions, such as Webfleet Tachograph Manager – which has now achieved approved IT supplier status from the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) as part of its earned recognition scheme – into fleet operations offers a clear compliance pathway.”

The importance of maintaining optimal trailer brake performance is universally acknowledged, Beverley adds; indeed, it is paramount for ensuring safety, compliance and operational efficiency, ultimately helping to preserve a fleet’s profitability and reputation.

“Innovations in fleet management solutions have led to the development of monitoring systems that can continuously assess the condition of trailer brakes remotely,” she said.

“By providing detailed insights into brake performance, these systems play a vital role in pre-emptively identifying issues, thereby minimising the need for traditional, quarterly rolling brake tests. This not only enhances safety, but also reduces operational disruption and maintenance costs.

“The regulatory landscape is evolving to place greater emphasis on such technological solutions, reflecting their growing importance in maintaining roadworthiness.

“The shift towards electronic brake performance monitoring systems (EBPMS) as a recognised standard exemplifies this trend, encouraging fleet operators to adopt these technologies sooner rather than later.

“From April 2025, laden roller brake tests or EBPMS will be the only accepted methods for brake testing, with few exceptions.”

While tachograph management and brake performance monitoring are critical components of operational compliance and safety, says Beverley, the monitoring of carbon emissions is proving increasingly important for environmental sustainability.

“Software solutions, such as the Webfleet CO2 Report, that offer detailed emissions reporting are becoming invaluable for fleets aiming to reduce their environmental impact and comply with emerging sustainability regulations,” she continued.

“These tools not only facilitate accurate emissions tracking, they enable operators to identify and implement strategies for emissions reduction, aligning operational efficiency with environmental stewardship.”
