Convey: how tachos help operators survive and thrive
Tachographs have long been essential to the UK’s transport industry, notes compliance solutions specialist Convey, evolving from manual logs to digital tools that improve compliance and operational efficiency.
Since digital tachographs were introduced in 2006, the ability to monitor driver compliance has vastly improved, says Convey, creating significant business benefits for operators who embrace them.
In this shift, Convey states it continues to support both new and experienced users, offering vital guidance on compliance while keeping them informed on regulatory updates and best practices, enabling them to operate more effectively, cut costs and increase productivity – all of which boosts profitability.
The UK’s commercial vehicle sector is under financial pressure, Convey points out, with newly established haulage companies facing particular challenges in staying viable, leading many to closure or insolvency. The firm says this high-risk environment emphasises the need for operators to prioritise efficiency and adaptability to secure a stable future.
While it may not be obvious, tachographs can be part of a wider solution that helps transport operators be more efficient and productive, says Convey; they provide data to help businesses refine processes, ensure compliance, and minimise expenses, contributing to overall business optimisation.
Karen Crispe, commercial director at Convey, said: “In today’s tough environment, it’s crucial for haulage companies to take advantage of every opportunity.
“With nearly half of new haulage companies at risk of insolvency, businesses should adopt a data-driven approach and remain flexible to succeed. Just as we continually evolve our platform to meet the changing demands of the transport industry, operators should embrace similar adaptability for a successful future.”
A key feature of Convey’s Tachograph Analysis Module is its remote downloading capability. Combined with Convey’s RD+ unit, it enables real-time tracking and helps businesses save both time and money, they say.
Automating the download process prevents data gaps and provides invaluable insights into vehicle locations. The company cites recent data showing that 46 per cent of operators now use remote downloading systems, up from 28 per cent in four years, reflecting the growing recognition of these benefits.
Convey is also fully accredited for both aspects of the DVSA’s Earned Recognition scheme. Its Earned Recognition module allows customers to evaluate their performance against key KPIs before formally joining, says Convey. The module highlights missed KPIs and identifies driver or vehicle issues, empowering operators to demonstrate compliance with standards, gain industry recognition, and meet DVSA-set benchmarks.
“By analysing tachograph data, operators can make informed decisions, improve driver productivity, and optimise routes, reducing fuel consumption and operating costs,” the company explained.
“Regular data downloads also prevent costly fines, helping companies maintain compliance and avoid penalties.”
“In a financially uncertain industry, streamlined compliance through modern tachograph systems provides a cost-effective way to improve business efficiency, increase productivity and improve bottom-line performance. It could just be the difference between merely surviving and thriving in this highly competitive transport sector.”
